Deposed Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was in quarantine today after those under house arrest with her in Naypyidaw tested positive for the coronavirus, according to reports.
Citing a source close to the court, Mizzima news said that as a precaution, the Nobel Laureate did not appear in court this morning for one in a series of trials on charges trumped-up by the military since it staged a coup d’etat in February 2021.
Although Suu Kyi has reportedly tested negative for the virus, she will spend a few days in isolation for her safety, the source told the outlet. She’s already been sentenced to a total of six years in jail since trials on various crimes began last year.
Ousted President Win Myint did appear in court via video.
The Union Supreme Court today also rejected an application to dismiss the five corruption charges against Aung San Suu Kyi, as well those against other members of her administration Ye Min Oo, Naing Ngan Lin, and Myo Aung in connection with this case.
Anti-coup demonstrators marched through Myanmar’s streets on Sunday as junta chief Min Aung Hlaing gave a 30-minute speech commemorating Armed Forces Day in Naypyidaw.
The putsch leader said he would not deal with “terrorist” opposition forces and vowed to take down those militants who have organized to fight his regime as the so-called People’s Defence Force, or (PDF.
“The Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) will no longer take into account negotiations with the terrorist group and their supporters killing innocent people… and will annihilate them to the end,” he said.
More than 1,700 civilian activists have been killed and almost 13,000 individuals detained since the coup last year, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a rights monitoring group based in Mae Sot, Thailand.
