Chris Rock may be willing to let “the slap” from Will Smith go—he’s not pressing charges and Diddy says there’s no ongoing feud—but the Academy is still looking into it.
On the night Will Smith won his first Oscar for his role as Venus and Serena Williams’s father in King Richard (and hit Rock), the Academy released a statement condemning violence but did not mention anyone by name.
The next day, Monday, March 28, the organization released a further statement saying, per People, “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”
The Academy’s Standards of Conduct includes language stating that “physical contact that is uninvited and, in the situation, inappropriate and unwelcome,” is unacceptable, and that if a member violates that standard, “the Academy may take any disciplinary action permitted by the Academy’s Bylaws, up to and including suspension of membership or expulsion from membership.”
