Marvel Studios’ upcoming animated series “Spider-Man: Freshman Year” will be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe it seems, just not the main one (ie. Earth-616).

Speaking with Phase Zero at ComicBook.com in the wake of San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, Marvel’s streaming and animation chief Brian Winderbaum confirms the series unfolds alongside the MCU timeline but isn’t a part of it:

“It follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:] Civil War, down to Peter getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his apartment for the famous moment where Tony Stark is waiting for him to offer him the Stark internship and take him to Berlin.

But because of things that happen in the multiverse because of new, random occurrences, it’s not Tony Stark who’s waiting for him there it’s Norman Osborn, and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel universe.”

Essentially the film is doing a “What If?” episode-style premise but stretched across an entire series. This will allow for new spins on existing characters, including versions of Doctor Strange and Daredevil (voiced by Charlie Cox), introduces new ones like Nico Minoru and Amadeus Cho, and avoids canon-breaking issues.

“Spider-Man: Freshman Year” premieres on Disney+ in 2024.
