Mumbai: There’s more to Rakesh Jhunjhunwala than simply trading and investing in the stock markets. His interest in movie-making has seen him bank-roll a couple of movies – all of them made by noted filmmaker R Balki. Rakesh has financed films like the 2012 much-acclaimed release ‘English Vinglish starring the late Sridevi and ‘Ki and Ka’ starring Kareena Kapoor & Arjun Kapoor that hit theatres in 2016 amidst mixed reviews.
But perhaps even more engaging than the films he has backed are the conversations Rakesh has every year on ET NOW at Diwali with a leading lady of Bollywood. If you consider the line-up of glamorous ladies over the years one could well call this eagerly anticipated annual event ‘Coffee with RJ’! From Kareena Kapoor to Alia Bhatt to Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif, they’ve all quizzed (and been quizzed by) the Big Bull of Dalal Street!
Sharing notes on concepts of success and failure, ways to dealing with both and delving into the innards of their respective professions, these conversations have been the toast of Dalal Street every year during the festive Diwali days. And some lines that emerge from those chats are worth re-visiting.
Take for instance a response to Alia Bhatt’s question about the markets. Rakesh in his trademark style likens the stock market to a woman: “The Stock Market is like a woman – always commanding, always mysterious, always volatile. It is as much about psychology as reality. Market is the only king. All those who tried to become king of the stock market went to Arthur Road jail. The only way you can survive is by living with her, adjusting with her, respecting her. Both women and markets are connected with 4-letter words,” he adds with a smile. “Markets with risk and Women with love.”
Even as her little son Taimur draws a lot of media attention, when Kareena Kapoor and Jhunjhunwala got chatting the conversation veered towards how to raise children. That’s when he shared what he advises his own three kids: “i want to teach them to give first of all. Second i want them to be responsible citizens. Third i want them to enjoy what they do in life. I want to be liberal towards them. I don’t want them to be what I want them to be…. I don’t want to interfere in their life because beyond a point Rekha (his wife) and I.. it’s our life… They will not be interested in us, we will not be interested in them… So I don’t want to intrude into their lives…” To all of these points, Kareena nods generously in approval.
As part of our film Rakesh Jhunjhunwala: The Making of a Legend’ on ET NOW we have strung together these and other engaging bits of the many chats Rakesh has had with a bevy of Bollywood beauties. Enjoy!
