The Final Fantasy 14 Team Is Already Working on the Next Expansion’s Story

Final Fantasy 14 devs are already working on the story of the game’s next expansion. The latest expansion concluded the decade-long arc of Hydaelyn/Zodiark. With that said, fans of the franchise are itching to know more about what Director Naoki Yoshida and his team have in store for the next story.

It has been almost five months since they launched Endwalker. This suggests that the community is still not even a quarter through its life cycle. However, Yoshida has confirmed that its entire story is actually already complete. His team is now already hard at work on the next expansion’s narrative.

“The plot for the main scenario in the Patch 6.X series has already been completed and we have decided on its conclusion,” Yoshida said. “Currently, script-related work for several patches and work on the detailed plot are underway.”

It makes a lot of sense for the devs to prepare the bulk of the narrative for the next two years. However, it is worth noting that the story structure of Endwalker is different from what fans may have grown accustomed to through the years. “On my end, I am already deciding on what I envision for 7.0,” Yoshida continued.

Taking a look at Final Fantasy tradition, post-expansion patches usually continue the story. This is their means of building up towards the next expansion. Endwalker, on the other hand, did not have a story to continue, with Patch 6.1 starting as a blank slate.

With that said, fans want to know the Final Fantasy 14 team’s plans of serving a fresh story with a decade of world-building behind it. It is interesting to see where devs are taking the game over the course of the expansion.
