The eye of Sauron that is fandom has turned to gaze upon Amy Schumer and Tom Holland. The two aren’t mad at each other (have they even met?), but after Schumer used a Holland video as a jumping-off point for a joke, fans are pissed. Points were made on both sides, in my humble opinion, but please, for the love of Marvel, stans, don’t come for me, I’m sensitive.
It all started three days ago, when Gen Z king Tom Holland posted a video to Instagram, where he has nearly 70 million followers, explaining that he’s been taking a social media break for the sake of his mental health, and will continue to do so. He took the opportunity to point to some charitable resources in that arena, writing in the caption, “Hello and goodbye… I have been taking a break from social media for my mental health, but felt compelled to come on here to talk about @stem4org . Stem4 is one of the many charities @thebrotherstrust is extremely proud to support – and I’d like to take a moment to shine a light on their fantastic work.”
(Since he doesn’t have any new projects to promote, it’s a good time for that! Looks like the only thing he has coming up is a miniseries, The Crowded Room, which is about mental health. Cool that he’s all in on this, I really mean that!)
So far, so chill. The Brit is gonna take a break from screen time, and the world continues to spin upon its mighty axis.
But then! Amy Schumer, writer and comedian and actor, etc., posted her own video to Instagram, which she captioned “mental health announcement.” In it, she adopts the faux-sincere tone and cadence (“Hey y’all…”) of a celebrity keeping it real and tells viewers that for her own well-being, she will continue to spend upwards of eight hours on her phone, and also watch reality television. She points to her facial acne as one of the many benefits of social media addiction.
