Kyle Walker may have foolishly been sent off in the Champions League tie against RB Leipzig, but talkSPORT host Andy Goldstein believes Pep Guardiola is to blame for starting the Man City right back in the first place.
Former Tottenham Hotpsur striker Darren Bent opposed the view, though, and said that the England man must take responsibility as a ‘senior player’.
The 30-year-old was sent off against the German outfit, who beat Guardiola’s side 2-1, and will now miss Man City’s first leg in the round of 16.
Goldstein laid into the right-back for getting sent off but blamed Guardiola for starting him and said he should have contemplated giving Walker a rest.
“Kyle Walker getting sent off, he’s an idiot, he’s a stupid boy,” the talkSPORT Drive host said.
“But that’s not his fault, that’s Pep Guardiola’s fault, he should not have been on the field.
“Phil Foden, has got a back injury, they took him off, and I quote – ‘as a precuation’ – here’s a precaution, don’t play him!”
Bent though could not believe what he was hearing and insisted Walker should have done better: “You cannot blame Pep Guardiola, I know he picked him but he’s got to trust him.
“Kyle Walker is a senior player in that squad, Pep Guardiola has entrusted him that you go out there…
“It was a red card, I don’t think whatsoever you can blame Pep.”
“It was Kyle Walker’s fault for doing it, but I blame Pep for putting him on the pitch [in the first place],” Goldstein added.
