Ever since the internet learned that Chris Pratt would voice Mario in Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, there’s been one question hanging over everyone’s heads: What the heck will he sound like?
Today, thanks to The Super Mario Bros. Movie Nintendo Direct, we finally have our answer. It turns out, most people think Chris Pratt’s Mario voice… Sounds just like Chris Pratt. To be fair, there’s not much to go on. In the movie’s debut trailer, Mario only says two full lines: “What is this place?” and “Mushroom Kingdom here we come!” Still, fans instantly noticed that it pretty much sounds like Pratt is just using his normal speaking voice.
While this may be a predictable outcome, Pratt himself didn’t help matters by hyping the vocal performance up, saying that his take on Nintendo’s iconic plumber is “unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.” He’s technically not wrong, since Chris Pratt has never appeared in the Mario world before this film, but that didn’t stop the internet from having a field day with the big voice reveal.

But even if fans didn’t like Chris Pratt’s Mario voice very much, they were generally pretty positive about the rest of the trailer.
the Mario movie trailer REALLY exceeded my expectations, I’m very happy with it
I came in expecting the stereotypical Illumination “vibes”, but it’s clear that they’re going for something different than their prior works, and I’m all for it

Meanwhile, the reception seems to be much more positive for Jack Black’s take on Bowser, as the actor showed up at New York City Comic Con to show off more of his villainous voice. We’ll be able to hear more of Pratt, Black, and the rest of the cast when The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to theaters on April 7, 2023.
