Kelly Stamps, 25, made the move from Los Angeles to New York City in April last year. She’d saved just enough money from YouTube to leave her family home and quit college.
She also saw a big opportunity to grow her YouTube channel.
“I was working, going to school full-time, working part-time and living with my mom. And I just was not happy,” Stamps told Insider. “It’s kind of hard to see an end-goal with college when you’re living at home and don’t even know what you want to do after.”
She now has more than 600,000 YouTube subscribers who look to her channel for what she describes as “minimalist lifestyle” content, documenting how she cut out her excessive belongings and was living frugally in the Big Apple. She also grew her profile by posting tips on how to make money from YouTube and personal-development advice.
Since moving to New York, her channel’s subscriber count jumped from 50,000 to more than 600,000. She now lives in Florida.
Stamps started out posting comedy content before moving to lifestyle and minimalism
Stamps’ early videos were comedy skits that she filmed from her phone, but she later began developing a long-form, sit-down video style.
“It’s still a challenge finding my niche,” Stamps said about her channel, which ranges in content from showing her minimalist belongings to personal finance tips.
Popular videos on her account include “Growing your YouTube channel (with 0 subscribers)” (1 million views) and “Watch this before starting your channel” (1.3 million views) and “My simple & financially minimalist lifestyle” (426,000 views).
After hustling away at her channel for more than a year, Stamps received her first AdSense paycheck for $52.98 in September 2019. Insider verified Stamps’ earnings with documentation she provided. AdSense allows creators with at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours to monetize their channels with ads. Earnings depend on factors such as video length and a channel’s audience demographics.
Since her first payment, Stamps has made $174,898 in total revenue from her YouTube ads, according to documentation she provided.
She credits her move to the New York City with helping her gain subscribers and a real audience base. Viewers were interested in her vlogs about the city and lifestyle content, as well as finding out more about how to afford to live there on a budget, Stamps said.
“I took their success and said, you know what, with my $2,000 paycheck, I’ll make the jump,” she said.
Stamps broke down her monthly YouTube ad earnings for 2021 so far:
March – $15,562.22
April – $12,369.63
May – $20,703.10
Stamps was earning around $1,000 a month from YouTube when she moved to New York, at first staying with a friend and later moving in with roommates from Craigslist where she split a room for $1,000 a month.
She then got a job in a restaurant where she was planning events and working in a more managerial role. But soon after that, her New York-focused content started gaining traction online and AdSense revenue spiked — from around $3,000 a month to $13,000 — allowing her to go full-time with YouTube.
Stamps says she’s going to keep pushing herself to earn as much as possible from YouTube.
“It’s crazy how with my computer, and some WiFi, and my cell phone, I can make an entire living,” she said. “I thought it would be temporary and never my full-time job.”
