Just when you’re ready to break up with baseball—after all of the sign-stealing, cheating, PEDs, sticky stuff, what have you—the game reminds you why you fell in love with it in the first place.
On Thursday night, the MLB held its long-awaited Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa. Two years ago, the league promised that it would resurrect the cornfield-flanked ballpark from the 1989 Kevin Costner classic, Field of Dreams, for one night of baseball—at the site where the movie was filmed, no less. After a year-long postponement due to the coronavirus, we finally saw the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees live out our sports-movie fantasies. Where to start? Costner himself showed up for the pregame ceremony, which saw the players enter via cornfield. Fans were clearly excited, too, with resale tickets going for thousands of dollars. If that wasn’t enough, the game ended with the White Sox winning with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Since the Field of Dreams looked like a genuine dream come to life, we put together a gallery of the best photos taken in Iowa on Thursday night.
