Indie developer T-Bull has launched an Android-exclusive early access client for its very first strategy game entitled Dice & Spells. Dice & Spells sees players transported to a dark high fantasy 2D world where they’ll do battle with various demonic forces and evildoers, all while taking advantage of magical dice that will dictate their battles.
The first thing that will likely strike you about Dice & Spells is the incredibly cool art style. It’s somewhere between Darkest Dungeon and any of the Telltale games, with a lovely cell-shaded look that douses the portraits of characters in deep shadow, making everything have that excellent grimdark vibe that fans of high fantasy tend to love.
The next thing that really makes it stand out is the combat system. While dice-based turn-based combat is nothing new (looking at you Dicey Dungeons), this one certainly takes a unique approach to the concept. Using three dice, you’ll roll from a variety of options depending on your party makeup. These range from simple slash attacks, to shielding, to spells, and more. Depending on the combination you get, you’ll play them in whichever order you please to do damage or negate damage from your opponents.
These opponents will range from dragons to zombies to skeletons, and so on and so forth. The enemy types will be quite familiar to anyone who enjoys fantasy settings, but each is fully realized in a portrait style that really makes them stand out from genre contemporaries.
Throw in a little bit of hero collection, as you’ll be able to slowly unlock more and more heroes as well as gear for each of them, and you’ve got a winning recipe for a pretty unique dungeon-crawling adventure. With over 50 stages on offer just in this early access launch, there’s also a ton of content on offer too!
If you’d like to give Dice & Spells a go yourself, you can check out the early access launch for free on Android right now! For now, there’s no word on an iOS launch nor an official launch date, so stay tuned to T-Bull’s official Twitter for any updates!
