Defensive end Chase Young, who had three tackles and one pass breakup last week against the Chargers, has been a beast on defense. Last season, he registered 44 tackles, including 32 solo, with 7.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss with four pass breakups. He also forced four fumbles and recovered three, returning one for a touchdown. In his last game against the Giants, he registered a sack. He has 4.5 sacks and five tackles for loss in six career games against NFC East opponents.
Also bringing the heat to opposing quarterbacks is defensive end Montez Sweat. He had a sack and a forced fumble last week against Los Angeles. He has three sacks and a forced fumble in his past three home games against NFC East rivals and is looking for his third home game in a row with a sack. In 16 regular-season games last year, Sweat had 45 tackles, including 28 solo, with nine sacks and 14 tackles for loss.
Why the Giants can cover
Like Washington, New York has a strong defense, which finished in the top half of the league statistically last season. Defensive back Logan Ryan led the Giants with 10 tackles, his fifth career double-digit tackle performance, and had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery last Sunday. He has five pass breakups, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a sack in three career games against Washington. He is looking for his third consecutive Thursday Night Game with a pass breakup.
Also powering the defense is linebacker Blake Martinez, who had nine tackles on Sunday and had 10 tackles and an interception in his last meeting with Washington. He is looking for his fifth game in a row against Washington with nine or more tackles. Martinez led the Giants in tackles in 2020 with 151, including 86 solo, including three sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
