In an interesting bit of casting, acting veteran Danny Trejo has been cast as Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the historical epic “1521”.
The film charts the pre-colonial era of the Philippines as Magellan led the Spanish expedition that reached the archipelago in March 1521.
Michael Copon (“One Tree Hill,” “Beyond the Break”) co-stars as Datu Lapu-lapu, the island ruler and leader of the warriors who fended off the attempted colonization in the Battle of Mactan several weeks later.
The film will also chart the forbidden romance between native Mactan princess Diwata (Bea Alonzo) and Magellan’s translator Enrique (Hector David Jr.).
Mary Krell-Oishi penned the script and filming begins this month in Palawan. Francis B. Lara Ho will produce.
