He’s one of the great actors out there, but Oscar Isaac’s track record with major studio films hasn’t been as consistently good as his with smaller, more auteur-driven fare.
His first experience with Marvel in particular, as the villain Apocalypse in the widely panned “X-Men: Apocalypse,” is amongst his weakest roles. However, he’s returning to the Marvel fold shortly with the highly anticipated Disney+ series “Moon Knight”.
Speaking to Empire, Isaac discussed what makes him excited about playing a superhero in the MCU to which he responded that the series is much more of a character study than some other superhero fare:
“Often on these big movies it can feel like you’re building the plane on the runway. The idea of getting back to ‘handmade’ films, character studies… I was desperate for that feeling. [‘Moon Knight’] felt ‘handmade’. And it’s the first legitimate Marvel character study since ‘Iron Man’…I thought, ‘Maybe I can hijack this thing. Maybe this is the chance to do something really f–king nutty on a major stage.’”
The series follows Marc Spector, a former SpecOps soldier who finds himself dealing with his Dissociative Identity Disorder while also (maybe) being imbued with the power of the Moon from the Egyptian god, Khonshu (voiced by F. Murray Abraham). To have a hero with mental issues is a big part of the appeal for Isaac:
“What I love most about this thing is that it’s an exploration of a mind that doesn’t know itself. A human being that doesn’t know his own brain. I found that really moving: what the mind is capable of as far as survival. But the workload was massive: the technical challenge of embodying these different characters, physically, the way I manifest my body… It required a lot of energy.”
Ethan Hawke also stars in the series which debuts on Disney+ on March 30th.
