GEORGE TOWN: A 50-year-old man has been arrested for alleged involvement in distributing untaxed cigarettes and fireworks worth over RM150,000.
Marine Police Region One commander Asst Comm Shamsol Kassim said the suspect was arrested between 6pm and 7pm on Wednesday (March 16) during raids in Kampung Pantai Besar in Batu Kurau,Perak.
“In the first raid on the suspect’s house, we seized 77,450 sticks of untaxed cigarettes.
“Interrogation of the man led us to another house where we found 26,450 sticks of untaxed cigarettes and fireworks,” he said in a statement on Friday (March 18).
ACP Shamsol said a total of the untaxed cigarettes had a total value of RM145,479 while the 180 boxes of fireworks of various brands amounted to RM5,866.
Police believe the suspect was actively distributing the contraband items for the past six months.
He said the items were believed to have been supplied to provision shops in the surrounding area.
The suspect, who had no criminal record, and the seized items were brought to Kerian police headquarters for further investigation, ACP Shamsol added.
The case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
