With the recent announcement of big films like Laxmmi Bomb, Bhuj: The Pride of India and Sadak 2, starring big names like Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt, releasing straight on OTT platforms, we thought of jogging our memory back and checking out who which Bollywood actors had already taken the bold step to appear in the digital space long before circumstances played a part. And when we talk about circumstances, we mean films like the aforementioned ones or others like Gulabo Sitabo and Shakuntala Devi, which have decided to arrive straight on streaming platforms due to long delays resulting from lockdown. Instead, let’s focus on the Hindi-film actors who decided to be a part of OTT content long before OTT became a cushion to fall back on. Here are 22 Bollywood actors who’ve starred in web series and web movies that were always designed to be part of the digital space:
1.) Nawazuddin Siddiqui – Sacred Games
The one that started it all, the first web series from India, and it brought two big names together in Nawaz and the gentleman next on the list.
2.) Saif Ali Khan – Sacred Games
Saif costarred with Nawazuddin to make the content of Sacred Games truly special, at least, it’s first season
3.) Radhika Apte – Sacred Games/Ghoul/Lust Stories
Radhika was so entrenched with Netflix at one point that she was being called the platform’s goto actress.
4.) Ali Fazal – Mirzapur
The next big Indian web show also featured some popular names from Bollywood with the first being 3 Idiots and Fukrey’s Ali Fazal…
5.) Pankaj Tripathi – Mirzapur
And the next being actor par excellence, Pankaj bhaiyya.
6.) Kiara Advani – Lust Stories/Guilty
Kiara can owe her entry into the Dharma camp to her two OTT ventures with the studio’s digital branch.
7.) Vicky Kaushal – Love Per Square Foot/Lust Stories
Before becoming a national heartthrob with Uri, Vicky gave company to Kiara and Angira Dhar on Netflix.
8.) Sunny Leone – Karenjit Kaur – The Untold Story of Sunny Leone
Sunny Leone starred in her own biographical show, and it became a runaway success, lasting three whole seasons that revolved around her unbelievable life story.
9.) Dia Mirza – Kaafir
The web gave Dia what Bollywood never could – an author-backed role, and she boy, did she sink her teeth into it.
10.) Shefali Shah – Delhi Crime
Though Bollywood has given Shefali far better roles than Dia, she never got a role like the one in Delhi Crime, which did full justice to her range.
Veteran actresses like Manisha, too, have ventured into the web for the lure of better roles.
12.) Huma Qureshi – Leila
Huma got to star in the central role in an ambitious project like Leila due to the digital space.
13.) Janhvi Kapoor – Lust Stories
Even new star kids are nowadays appearing on OTT platforms.
14.) Manoj Bajpayee – The Family Man/Mrs. Serial Killer
One of the country’s most revered actors also soared great heights in the web space, but had a misstep at the same time.
Unfortunately, Jacqueline’s OTT debut coincided with Bajpayee’s misstep.
16.) Arshad Warsi – Asur
Just like Dia, it was the web that finally gave Arshad an author-backed role. For all his amazing comic talents, who wouldn’t thought he could’ve played such a sombre, dark character?
17.) Kay Kay Menon – Special Ops
Ditto for Kay Kay, with creator Neeraj Pandey himself revealing that box-office constraints don’t allow him to cast someone like the actor in a lead role despite having worked with him in the past.
18.) Jaideep Ahlawat – Paatal Lok
While Jaideep admitted in out interview that he well understands why he couldn’t be cast in leading roles in Bollywood films like Raazi and Baaghi 3, he was over the moon with his part in Paatal Lok, and rightly so.
19.) Vivek Oberoi – Inside Edge
After years of hibernation in Bollywood, Vivek was back to his sinister best on screen courtesy the highly popular Inside Edge.
20.) Vir Das – Hasmukh
Vir combined his standup talents with a dark theme to come up with this idiosyncratic show.
21.) Amit Sadh – Breathe and Breathe 2/Barot House
Never before has Amit’s talents shone like they did on the web, not even in Kai Po Che.
22.) Abhishek Bachchan – Breathe 2
23.) Swara Bhasker – Rasbhari
Finally, Swara, too has made her OTT debut with this adult-themed show.
And finally, Abhishek is trying his hand at the digital space, too, to perhaps get the recognition denied to him on the big screen.
