Which Reason Will You Side With? Which Will You Oppose?
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD is still coming, and we’re still on the edge of our seats, but this new trailer does a lot to tide us over. There’s nothing quite like a quick introduction to a game’s factions to drum up interest, and the forces of evil and other, mutually-contradictory evil do a lot to bring life to Nocturne’s dark world. In the wake of the apocalypse, only a handful of humans are still alive, and you’re not among that number–that’s why you’re called the Demi-Fiend. Each of these surviving humans has the potential to develop a Reason, a rationale by which the world can be reborn. Problem is, none of them has a good head on their shoulders, so your options are Yosuga, a world of power and violence; Musubi, a world of selfishness and isolation; and Shijima, a world of nothingness and serenity.
The Reason of Yosuga was created by your wealthy classmate Chiaki, an aloof girl who doesn’t seem like the type who would try and force the world to bow before her, but people change–and break–under pressure. The Reason of Shijima is the brainchild of the cruel and enigmatic Hikawa, the ruthless cult leader whose actions led directly to the Conception that destroyed the world as we know it. The Reason of Musubi was at least created by one of your friends, Isamu, but Isamu isn’t doing well in the demon-ridden Vortex World, and his selfish and short-sighted Reason definitely reflects that.
If you’re afraid of some Renegade/Paragon divide, don’t worry–none of these Reasons are treated any better than the rest. They’re all the flawed creation of flawed characters. Choose whichever one strikes a chord in you, or the one that seems most interesting. And if nothing fits the bill… well, nobody said you had to pick a Reason. You can always strike on your own and try to carve your own path, though the consequences of that decision may be the most horrifying of all.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD will be out for Nintendo Switch and PS4 on May 25th, 2021.
