An interesting reaction as Jeff Hendrick becomes the latest Newcastle United player called up by his country for the September internationals.
The Republic Of Ireland naming the NUFC midfielder but not Ciaran Clark in the squad announced today (Thursday 26 August).
This follows the earlier call ups of Jamal Lewis for Northern Ireland and Ryan Fraser for Scotland.
Meanwhile, it looks as though Miguel Almiron won’t be heading off toe South America. Paraguay have two home games and an away one at Ecuador in September but both are red list countries and with no exemptions as things stand, Almiron would have to quarantine when arriving back in the UK, missing three matches. The Premier League collectively getting together and agreeing no players should go out and play at red list countries in these September internationals.
As for Jeff Hendrick and his recall to the Republic of Ireland squad, I saw the news on Twitter and was interested to see the reaction from Ireland fans…:
‘I thought I’d never have to see Hendrick in an Ireland shirt again.’
‘No browne or Kilkenny yet Hendrick is there.’
‘Good lord, I want to support Kenny but no Kilkenny, yet Arter and Hendrick are in.’
‘No Kilkenny and Hendrick [in], what an absolute shame that is.’
‘Christ, no Scully or Kilkenny and Hendrick in.’
‘Hendrick in the squad. Sadness confirmed.’
‘Jeff Hendrick back in the national side. Wtf is that all about?’
‘Jeff Hendrick hold meeeeee’
I don’t much about football in the Republic of Ireland but know the standard isn’t great, so when they want players playing in their domestic league ahead of ‘Premier League’ player Jeff Hendrick, I think it is a bit of a cause for concern for Newcastle fans…
