BMG books legendary Berlin theater Theater des Westens every night through 2024.

Global music company BMG has announced that it has booked Berlin’s most renowned theater every night until the end of 2024. The 1,600-seat Theater des Westens will be the beating heart of Berlin’s growing live events industry, featuring not just BMG’s roster of stage musicals but a series of residencies by national and international recording artists.

“The Theater des Westens is arguably the greatest theater in the German capital,” says BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch. “As a Berlin-born company and the only German-owned and managed global player in the music industry, we are proud to make this investment in the musical life of our hometown.

The Theater des Westens is operated by Netherlands-based live entertainment company Stage Entertainment, while the city of Berlin owns the building. Its revered 120-year stage has played host to Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Anna Pavlova, and Maria Callas. It has recently focused on German-language productions of international hit musicals like Les MiserablesChicago, and Mamma Mia!

“We are delighted to have found in BMG a renowned and ambitious partner for Theater des Westens and are happy to support the company in all marketing efforts for its compelling artistic concept,” says Ulf Dewald, Director of Operations at Stage Entertainment.

The news of BMG’s new two-year lease of the theater coincides with the announcement that tickets have gone on sale for Romeo & Julia – Liebe Ist Alles, a musical from the team behind Ku’damm 56. Written by BMG-published songwriters Peter Plate and Ulf Leo Sommer, Ku’damm 56 is widely considered the most successful new German language musical.

“We are committed to making the Theater des Westens the premier venue for entertainment in Berlin. Taking such a long lease on a venue is a first for a music company,” says BMG Chief Content Officer Dominique Casimir.”

We are starting with two great shows — Ku’damm 56 and now Romeo & Julia — but there is a lot more to come. Bringing high-end artist residencies to Berlin is a first for Germany. We see a particular opportunity for established artists who want to present a high-end show in a beautiful venue rather than embarking on a regular tour.”

In addition to BMG’s plans to include residencies for music artists, they also report working with fellow Bertelsmann Content Alliance companies to explore the potential for hosting spoken word performance events. This would enable readings by Penguin Random House authors, Bertelsmann Audio Alliance podcast events, or performances by stars from the largest commercial broadcaster in Germany, RTL.
