The NieR: Automata 5th Anniversary Livestream event announced a television anime adaptation for the video game on Wednesday. Aniplex is producing the anime.
Developed by PlatinumGames, the action role-playing game was published by Square Enix on PlayStation 4 in Japan in February 2017, followed by North America and PAL countries in March that year. The game was also released on PC in the same month and on Xbox One in June 2018. The game serves as a sequel to the 2010 video game NieR—a spin-off to the Drakengard game series.
Jun Eishima penned a three-volume light novel adaptation supervised by the game’s director Taro Yoko between August 2017 and July 2018.
Megumu Soramichi began drawing a manga adaptation of Taro Yoko’s Ongakugeki YoRHa Ver.1.2 stage play in December 2020 on the Manga UP! web magazine. Square Enix shipped the first volume on April 22.
Game Synopsis
Set thousands of years after the events of NieR, the story revolves around a war between humanity’s remaining androids and an army of invading machines from another world. Their initial irruption drove the Earth’s population to flee to the Moon. In order to reclaim the planet, humanity formed the “YoRHa” squad, a combat droid unit that would fight in a side conflict. Despite the fact that they are denied emotions and have no real names, they can be identified by their distinct attitudes.
The androids are led by the “Bunker,” the YoRHa automated infantry squad’s headquarters in orbit above the planet, which establishes a self-sufficient resistance on Earth to push back the machines.
