In the wake of yesterday’s nine-month delay of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film’s director James Wan took to Instagram to briefly talk about the delay and offer some visual teases of the movie.
This follow-up to 2018’s “Aquaman,” which ended up grossing $1 billion at the box-office, was originally slated to open this year. But then pandemic-related issues saw the film pushed back to March 2023.
More recently, the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly taking steps to restructure the DCEU’s theatrical strategy – which led to the scrapping of “Batgirl” and now has seen additional delays for this and the “Shazam” sequel.
The need for more post-production time has been cited as one reason behind the move, not unexpected with the industry-wide visual effects backlog. Even so, there are obvious questions and concerns raised, but Wan opted to show off some artwork from the movie and explains why he feels good about the extra time he’s getting:
“AQUAMAN & The Lost Kingdom moving to Christmas Day 2023. I’m a bit superstitious, and I love that it’s a December release like the first one! Here is a small glimpse of some artwork into the big, epic world-building we’re creating, and I need the time to do it right. These images barely scratch the surface of this movie (haven’t even shown the weird and wonderful characters and creatures of this world yet). I can’t wait to show, but you have to wait just a little bit longer ;)”
The obvious question that has arisen has been whether the studio will want to make changes to the film to potentially sow the seeds for their “ten-year plan” for DC. Whatever the case, with the film now a full sixteen months away from release, there’s plenty of time for Wan and the studio to make the film they want.
The film’s star Jason Momoa is busy filming “Fast 10” right now, playing that film’s villain. He tells Variety this week his role is “very sadistic and androgynous, and he’s a bit of a peacock… He’s got a lot of issues, this guy. He’s definitely got some daddy issues”.
