The Power of the Dog crew showed up in force at the LACMA Art + Film Gala. Benedict Cumberbatch—who introduced himself to Lil Nas X—along with Sophie Hunter, was there, as were power couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons, and scene-stealer Kodi Smit-McPhee. The film is a heavy favorite for a Best Picture nomination, and all of these people are favored to be nominated in the acting categories—Smit-McPhee has better odds than Plemons, though—as is director Jane Campion, for Best Directing. Actually winning Oscars is going to be a lot tougher, because this is a CRAZY competitive year, and Belfast is building up a head of steam, and Ridley Scott’s not done yet, and King Richard and Will Smith are waiting in the wings. But at the very least, this is just the start of seeing the Dog crew at events like this for the next few months.
Do you think celebrity couples count events like this as date night? Like this is the Cumber-Hunter and Dunst-Plemons households “night out”? Both couples are the parents of young children (there are five kidlets between them and I cannot name any of them except one of the Dunst-Plemons kids is called “Ennis”, I remember that celebrity baby name because it is both rare and interesting). As working parents of young kids, I assume these people don’t have a ton of time for date night. But when your work includes dressing up for fancy parties, does that count? Or do they draw a line and say no, it’s work, you still owe me a proper night out?
As for the fashion, it’s fine. Cumberbatch’s dinner jacket is okay, mostly I like the contrast with Sophie Hunter’s red dress. Kirsten Dunst’s style is best described as “vintage doily”, and her dress is right in line with that, and Plemons looks fine in his tux. Mostly, they always look like they have fun together (see above: date night thoughts). I bet they’re GREAT at dinner parties. But the real fashion winner is Kodi Smit-McPhee in an OUSTANDING patterned suit with feathered sleeves that remind me of a marabou robe. The suit is Gucci, and Jared Leto, also in Gucci, has similar feathered sleeves on his suit. But Leto’s suit is plain white, and while we can talk about the androgynous elements of it, it’s kind of boring, but for the pink feathers. Smit-McPhee’s suit, though, has that great pattern and the orange/green contrast that makes it sing. I love this so much I screamed a little when I saw it. It’s a gala held at a modern art museum, you SHOULD be dressing like one of the works on the wall, and this look is pure pop art. Kodi Smit-McPhee understood the assignment.
