Starring Tong Yao (童瑤) and Wang Anyu (王安宇), upcoming sci-fi mystery Ball Lightning <球狀閃電> will begin filming in April. Working together for the first time, they will likely showcase interesting chemistry despite Tong Yao being 12 years older than Anyu. As both are challenging themselves with a new genre, successful performances may very well drive their career to greater heights.
Ball Lightning is adapted from a popular novel of the same name by award-winning author Liu Cixin (刘慈欣). The story unfolds with Chen Guang celebrating his 14th birthday with his parents one night, when a sudden ball of lightning blasted in his home and incinerated his parents right before his eyes. Since the life-changing event, Chen Guang became driven to solve the mystery of the ball lightning. Over the years, he immerses himself in studying the subject and successfully attains a PhD. In his research journey, he meets military technology researcher Lin Yun who encourages him to create a new weapon with his knowledge. Conflicts arise between the two on their different philosophies, but they eventually collaborate when extraterrestrial threats seek to turn the world upside down.
For a long time, sci-fi themed Chinese dramas and movies have yet to find a strong footing in the domestic market as consumption for the genre was low. Despite some projects seeking to challenge the genre, not many have successfully taken off until 2019’s The Wandering Earth, which is considered as a trailblazer for more innovative science fiction works in China.
All eyes are now on Ball Lightning to make another mark in the genre, particularly as Liu Cixin is a prominent science fiction writer in China.
