With outdoor sport becoming a distant reality, a workout in the gym coming with its own fears and even a morning jog no longer a walk in the park in the wake of the coronavirus-triggered pandemic, B-Townies have turned to the humble bicycle for their daily cardio. Going incognito under masks, helmets and glares, they cruise almost empty streets, exhilarated to stretch their legs and limits after months of being cooped indoors.
Divya Khosla Kumar, who is used to dancing and skating, started cycling in her building compound towards May-end. “I started venturing out as far as the Lokhandwala back road, with my son, Ruhaan, joining me to add to the fun,” she laughs, insisting that riding while wearing a mask isn’t difficult. “But given all the traffic, it will not be sensible to continue cycling on the streets when things go back to normal.”
Emraan Hashmi, however, started cycling only recently, simply because he was bored. “While the mask is a hindrance for most people, for celebs it provides a sense of freedom as you can go unrecognised,” says the actor who cycles thrice a week and vouches for the low-impact cardiovascular activity that’s easy on the knees. “One Sunday, I cycled all the way to the Gateway of India from my Bandra home. Otherwise, my wife and I take our son Ayan to Carter Road or Bandstand at 7 am. We’re back before his school hours begin,” he shares.
Salman Khan was dodging city traffic and turning up at studios on his cycle even before the new normal. During the shutdown, cut off at his Panvel farmhouse, the actor, followed by a fleet of fellow cyclists, often whizzes past surprised fans.
► His childhood memories come flooding as
Suniel Shetty reveals that there was a cycle shop opposite his Napean Sea Road home, from where his friends and he would hire cycles and ride to Nariman Point. “While returning, we’d stop for bun-maska and sugarcane juice, that became our ritual,” he recalls, conceding that over time, cycling turned to spinning classes in the gym, a great way to exert the core and lower body. “Right now, I’m in my Khandala house and go cycling with my kids, Athiya and Ahan. Back home, I plan to ride with my buddies, who still do 20 km daily.”
► With regular football matches cancelled,
Ranbir Kapoor took to the streets. But even in full cycling gear, his face covered up, he was ‘caught’ by the paparazzi. Ditto
► Throughout the lockdown,
Sara Ali Khan and brother
Ibrahim were working out together in their makeshift home gym. But as soon as rules were relaxed, they rode their way around Bandra, the two-wheelers following them to Goa where the actress was stationed all through her birthday month.
